Wheatley Brook and culvert 1858

Archive Notes:

This follows the line of the Old London Road on its south side before it crosses from south to north of the Old London Road, and then runs north alongside the London Road.

The article on 'Culverting the stream' is acknowledged to the late John Prest from chapter 7 of The Most Difficult Village.

The references to Elton deciding to petition the General Board of Health in London to apply the Health of Towns Act of 1848 to the village was way ahead of his time as, by 1872, only 50 councils had Medical Officers of Health, references to which appear, in 1863, in Elton's diary in record 1211. Many councils resisted taking any measures, often for 20 years or more, and some medical officers had to cover huge areas and were, as a result, unable to be effective. It only became compulsory to have a Medical Officer of Health by legislation in 1872. This role was taken over by Wheatley Urban District Council see record 2519.

The High Street stream was culverted by the end of 1858.
