It is speculated that the building of this Temperance building stemmed from the Oxford Temperance movement as shown in one of the attachments with a copy of the Oxford drinks map also.

According to Kellys Directory of 1895 and 1899, Joseph Gould was then the manager. In 1911 George James Silvester was the manager.
