Vicars of St Mary's Church

Archive Notes:

List of Vicars of St Mary's Church 1848 - 2011 and Curates in 1771, 1810, 1823 and 1848. The three curate names before 1848 cannot apply to St Mary's as it hadn't been built. While record 2810 shows the sources of deposits at the Oxford History Centre (as PAR 286) by the PCC, it seems unlikely that the resulting 26 boxes would reveal the names of the curates.

However, information on Bishop Helen-Ann Hartley, much in the news during the Church of England scandal relating to John Smyth (dec'd), spoke out about 'coercive language' used by two of the most senior figures in the Church of England. This led to a BBC report on 12 November 2024 with the photo shown attached to this record. Born in 1973, Hartley did her Ministry course in 2003, became a lecturer at Ripon College in Cuddesdon from 2005, when she also became Curate of St. Mary's Church, Wheatley for 2 years. She is now (2024) Bishop of Newcastle.

Photos of vicars, not found elsewhere in the archive.

Rev Curry had previously been involved in New Hinksey but in what capacity is not know, see https://southoxfordhistory.org.uk/interesting-aspects-of-grandpont-and-south-oxford-s-history/schools. He appears to have been a sponsor of the new school in 1892.

Brief biography of Rev. James Watson 2003-2011.
