Wheatley's last train

Archive Notes:

Photographs taken in the daylight, of the passenger train which ran on the last day of service, January 6 1963, although this left Oxford in the dark at 5.50 pm on 6 January and left Princes Risborough for the return trip at 7.20pm.  Tom Hassall travelled on it with his parents. There is an account of the journey in the Oxford Mail. His father wore his D.Phil gown and when asked by the Oxford Mail who he was he replied 'Dr Beeching'. Mrs Hassall wore an Edwardian mourning dress and Tom wore a DJ.  Land of Hope and Glory was played on a wind-up gramophone.
