Wheatley windmill more detailed history 1808-1900 with details of owners, mortgages, map showing two windmills in 1811, brief history of the post mill which burnt down in 1875. Post Mill House is on the site of this mill.
Thomas Dugard, the purchaser in 1878, was described as an Oxford color (sic) manufacturer. It seems from other references that grinding ochre was then the main role of the windmill, see record 2234; Rev. Edward Elton referred to it in 1870, see record 0490; there were two people noted as involved in the ochre business in the 1881 census, see record 2439. Ochre grinding had ended before 1900.
