Extracts from Rev. Elton's diaries

Archive Notes:

Extracts with quotations from Edward Elton's diaries 1850 - 1884. Also in "Wheatley Records" 956-1956 by W.O.Hassell. Record 2261 is a more complete version. The Ammonite referred to in November 1864 would have evolved when this was a sea, in the Upper Jurassic Palaeogeography era 130-160 million years ago, as shown in two images on this record. The ammonites evolved at a rate that allows us to subdivide this 30 million years into approximately 1 million year intervals. See also record 0677 and 2830

Elton was appointed at the end of June 1849, despite Rev. John Garrett remaining in post away until November 1849.

As reported in the Oxford Journal on 1 March 1856, there had been a Vestry meeting on 21 February for the purpose of granting a rate of 2d. to meet the current expenses of the year. This had been opposed in favour of the voluntary principle, but the vote went against this latter proposition. Such opposition was described as as the more unreasonable on account of the smallness of the rate but also the fact that the contribution to the Church rate of Cuddesdon, the Mother Church to which Wheatley contributed, had been abolished within the last few months.

There are two references of the enclosing of the brook into a culvert on 9 October 1856 and 9 January 1857. From the latter it appears to have been done under the 'Health of Towns Act'.

See also record 2461 for details of the so-called riot in October 1849.
