One Sunday in May 1944 prior to “D-Day” the house had been requisitioned by the war office for a simulated military attack. Canadian soldiers were the “enemy” & Longside their HQ. The following dawn they retreated before a British infantry charge with fixed bayonets, who swept across the fields from Garsington and crashed through the garden and down ladder hill. All watched by the Avery family from their windows!
