Salute the Soldier week 1944

Archive Notes:

On 16 July 1944 as part of 'Salute the Soldier' week, a Drumhead service was held in the Village Square, involving the Home Guard, Royal Engineers, Civil Defence and the Cadet group and band. Two photographs show soldiers marching through the village.

In the first, Frank Watts leads the band along Church Road past Ethel Munt's bungalow & Dodd's Bakery. In the second, the group is led by Alfred Paintin (2nd from the right at the front), who was married to Cassie Cripps and who was chauffeur to Lord Nuffield for many years.
