Archive Notes:
The Temperance Movement resulted in the building of the Merry Bells as a temperance hotel in 1888 by the Millers of Shotover House. Later, there were two groups, led by Henry Atherton (then manager of the Temperance Hotel) and Mrs Atherton, one of which was the Men's Mutual Improvement Class, shown in 1908. Very large framed photograph kept at Shotover House (with permission for WVA to display).
Chairman was Albert East, Treasurer Walter Palmer, the Secretary and leader was Henry Atherton (manager of the Merry Bells Temperance Hotel.)
