Edward Elton's appointment
Edward Elton's notebook 1867 to about 1884 and entitled 'Memoranda connected with Wheatley Parish' is held in the Oxfordshire History Centre, ref PAR286/9/MS/1 .
Incumbents of the old chapel (on the now Memorial garden) were Robert Holmes from 1784, Robert Downes, afterwards Richard Downes from 1795, William Langley from 1825, Emilius Bagley 1848-1849, with Edward Elton instituted in 1849. Marriages were allowed from 1850, rates were paid to the mother church in Cuddesdon until 1854.
The new National School was built in 1858 at a cost of some £1,000 on land given by Mr Morrell. It consisted of a Master's House and initially there were 30 boys and 17 girls who paid (according to means) between 2d. and 6d., presumably per term.
The Infants School (or Infant School) in Bell Lane was built in 1851 on land of some 30 poles, bought by William Pusey in 1851.
There was a small dame school in Littleworth.
This is different from his diaries for the years 1850-1887, for which see record 1211.
Elton was appointed at the end of June 1849, despite Rev. John Garrett remaining in post away until November 1849.
See also record 2461 for details of the so-called riot in October 1849.
