Talk by Robert Avery
Summary of an illustrated talk given by Robert Avery on the Wheatley Railway 12.02.04 For photos see also records 1697, 1698, 1699, 1700 and 1701.
The railway opened in 1864, serving Oxford, High Wycombe, with a link to London via Maidenhead. Lady Otteline Morrell, owner of Garsington Manor, was a passenger on the line. Adjacent to the station was Avery’s saw mills; William Avery ran a furniture business in High Wycombe, and the rail connection was ideal for running a large industry in Wheatley. The Beeching cuts of 1960s closed the line in 1964, the track was lifted in 1969 and the bridge over the railway line, blown up in 1971.The new development off Ladder Hill, Kelham Hall Drive, was named after a locomotive that used the line.
